Nesting underneath our noses!
The Country Smallholder
|May 2025
Helen Moffat of the RSPB says keep an eye out in your garden and on your smallholding on every level for brooding birds and chicks
-
We tend to have an image of birds nesting in trees but the reality is, most smaller birds choose other locations, whether that's tucked away in scrubby undergrowth or using man-made spaces such as guttering or old plant pots. May is definitely the month to keep your eyes peeled - both to ensure you're not disturbing nearby nesters, but also to enjoy their company! Laying eggs, incubating and then feeding chicks is a lot of work and requires a great deal of energy for the parent birds. It's not uncommon to come upon nests that are tucked away in unused corners by accident, but there's a few things you can do to be more aware of where your garden birds are caring for their broods!
