Another month, another brood of birds!
The Country Smallholder
|July 2025
The frenetic energy of bird breeding season is always associated with spring — but there's still plenty of nesting action in July for quite a number of our garden birds says Helen Moffat

It's not quite as high octane as April and May, when the Dawn Chorus is in full first-light swing and birds with beakfuls of nesting material and then later - food - are flitting around everywhere, but there's still a good number of species who will be attempting second, even third broods this month.
You may be able to spot lots of tits around your garden and plot, especially if it's been a successful breeding season and parent birds have successfully fledged a lot of young, but they're no longer breeding. They rely heavily on caterpillars to feed chicks, and time their broods in early spring to make the most of the glut at this time. Now, these birds are intent on making the most of any other food sources around, and regaining some energy.
