“ANGEL' was brought over from Ireland as a foal by Carolyn Bates at Grafham Stud; I rode Carolyn’s stallion Philanderer. Angel came to me at six years old to be sold, having done diddly squat and at the time she was a bit feral.

“She would squeal at everyone, run out at doubles and there was no such thing as walk; she jogged everywhere. I actually didn’t like her much at first, but once I started training her up, my parents were really impressed, saying they'd never seen a horse jump like that. I said, ‘Please don’t keep her, she’s so annoying!’ But they went ahead and bought her.
