CORGI: SMALL SIZE BIG CHARM

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi, a breed adored for its charming personality, expressive face and short, sturdy legs, has long been a favourite among dog lovers. Famous for being the preferred breed of British royalty, particularly Queen Elizabeth II, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is not just a cute face, this breed is packed with energy, intelligence and a big heart in a small package. These dogs are known for their herding instincts, loyalty and affectionate nature, making them a delightful companion for both active families and individuals alike. They have a fascinating history, distinct traits, care requirements and reasons why Pembroke Welsh Corgis have become one of the most beloved dog breeds worldwide.

imageA Royal History with Humble Beginnings

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi's origins can be traced back to the tenth century in Pembrokeshire, Wales, where these dogs were bred for their herding abilities. Despite their small size, Corgis were excellent herders of cattle, sheep and even ponies, using their low stature to nip at the heels of livestock while avoiding kicks. The breed's name, Corgi, is believed to be derived from the Welsh words "cor" meaning dwarf and "gi" meaning dog, reflecting its small but sturdy build.

imageThe breed gained international fame when Queen Elizabeth II received her first Pembroke Welsh Corgi, named Dookie, in 1933. Over the decades, the Queen owned more than 30 Corgis, which solidified their reputation as a royal breed. This association with British royalty has made the Pembroke Welsh Corgi a symbol of loyalty and nobility, although its roots remain in the practical and hardworking fields of Wales.
