John Sones looks at driving licences and towing trailers

Weighing up what you can drive

Smallholders frequently invest in vehicles that are safe and legal to tow, with moving animals high on the list as a reason for owning such a vehicle. A trailer can accommodate smaller farm livestock and one or two of the larger livestock while you may need a lorry for large animals or large numbers of animals, but whichever you choose, it must conform to legal standards for transporting animals. The Welfare of Animals in Transport (WATO) may also require that you hold their Certificate of Competency - check online. If you do need to take this there are many providers but your Smallholder Club, LANTRA, or the NFU may be the most economical.
