Becoming Children’s Laureate is a huge honour and big responsibility, and when I found out I might be in the running for the position I was thrilled. The role is given out every two years to celebrate a writer’s achievements, and for the Laureate to engage kids in the joy of reading.

I was told to expect a phone call informing me whether or not I’d been awarded the position. So, when i finally received the call to answer it, forgetting I’d just left the dentist with a mouthful of Novocaine.
