She placed first at the WBFF Gold Coast comp this year, but with all that Roxanna Camilleri has overcome, the achievements on stage may not even place as the biggest of her life.

Breaking Barriers

Smart training and education have been at the forefront of Roxanna Camilleri’s life-changing decision. She began training in her final year at university with a one-kilometre run and some crunches. She laughs as she explains how different her training is from that first session to now.

“I started at the gym myself creating random workouts,” she says, “then started Crossfit, followed by working with a local PT and doing pure bodybuilding.

“These days, I work with Adonis Athletics who program my training as ‘powerbuilding’. This is a hybrid style of training that is a mix of powerlifting and bodybuilding, while I use Crossfit-style workouts for my cardio.

“I love my training style, because I can focus on strength, cardiovascular, and aesthetics. It’s very well-rounded.”

Working with Equalution now and very early on in her fitness career helped Roxanna to grasp a better understanding of macronutrients and nutrition overall, while training professionals such as Adonis Athletics have taught her to understand different training techniques.

Four years ago, Roxanna was living “a very typical ‘uni student’ life” — “I think Allen’s lollies and Smiths chips were my main food group,” she says. “Great brain food, right?” — but being into physical movement, dance, jazz, and ballet, she was always active.

Now this interest has transferred on to the stage, with wins in the WBFF this year, but her two biggest achievements in life have come in different arenas.

In her teens, she was painfully aware of a slight aesthetic deformity, an underbite that caused her bottom jaw to protrude out about 15mm. At age 20, she endured a seven-hour double jaw surgery to correct her bite.
