The firm, Bowers & Wilkins started in Worthing, Sussex, UK in 1966 and was named after its promoters, John Bowers and Roy Wilkins. From the beginning, the emphasis was on technology and the result was some of the best loudspeakers the world has seen.

B & W speakers rank amongst the best loudspeakers in the world and the company has a huge heritage of iconic models. The 21st century was hard for specialist speaker manufacturers and many reputed British brands like Castle, Heybrook and Celestion bit the dust. Others like Wharfedale, Tannoy and KEF were acquired by Oriental buyers. B & W was acquired in 2016 by Canadian company, Eva Automation. In October 2020, Sound United LLC, based in California (and owner of brands like Marantz and Denon) acquired B & W.
