Teams mourn Tour de Yorkshire cancellation

Stage race axed due to funding shortfall

British teams were last week mourning the demise of the Tour de Yorkshire in 2022 after organizers abandoned attempts to resurrect the race. The 2. The pro-ranked race was the last run in 2019 but was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. Hopes that it might return next year were bolstered last month as £600,000 of backing from local authorities had been secured.

However, that was not enough to cover the race’s costs and, in the absence of further funding sources, the tourist board Welcomes to Yorkshire and Tour de France organizer ASO took the decision to ax the race.

It’s unclear if it will return in 2023. Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive James Mason said discussions to try and secure the race’s future had been going on “for months”. He added: “We still have ambitions for large events going forward to put Yorkshire on the world stage.”
