EF man’s 11th place bodes well for future.

Carthy Comes Of Age In Italy

Hugh Carthy (EF Education First) led the wave of new British riders in Grand Tours over the last three weeks in the 2019 Giro d’Italia. Carthy confidently held his own alongside the big-name GC favourites and even seemed wholly unflustered after being berated by Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) at the end of stage 16 for not contributing more.

The 24-year-old polished off the three weeks with 11th overall and two top-five results in mountain stages.

“I have a long way to go,” Carthy told Cycling Weekly. “It’s a good step, it’s the right time as well, the right age to show this kind of potential.”

His goal had been a top 10 overall, but he slipped behind in the summit finish stage to Lago Serrù on stage 13.
