At the best of times, the striped hyaena Hyaena hyaena, gets a raw deal from humans. Unfairly accused of being a child lifter, this extraordinary scavenger is an omnivore. An arid zone dweller, it has been persecuted by generations of humans fed on fanciful tales of its imagined viciousness. Not by any stretch of imagination a ‘pretty’ creature, its sloping back, powerful jaws and peculiar gait lead people to easily believe the worst about the animal.
