Just when the people started expecting some nasty fireworks between West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, following the fortnight-long spat from both sides (the constitutional head and the Cabinet ministers of the state government), the two decided to call a truce and cool the rising tempers.

In fact, the governor took the initiative, since he was partly responsible for stoking the fire, though the actual trigger was embedded in politics. Amid allegations and counter-allegations from both camps, the state got caught in a war of words reaching ugly heights with political parties adding more fuel to the fire by taking distinct sides — the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) jumped in the ring on the side of the governor, who was known to be Union Home minister Amit Shah’s man. Meanwhile, the entire Trinamool Congress threw its weight behind its party leaders.
