BORIS Johnson gave thanks on behalf of Britain for the “extraordinary” lifetime of service Prince Philip gave to the United Kingdom.
The Prime Minister praised the Duke of Edinburgh’s wartime bravery and charity work that transformed the lives of young people.
He also told how the crucial private support Philip gave the Queen played a pivotal role in shaping the monarchy in a way that contributed to the happiness of the nation.

In a Downing Street tribute, Mr Johnson said: “Like the expert carriage driver that he was, he helped to steer the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life.”
Philip was one of the last survivors to have served during the Second World War at Cape Matapan, where he was mentioned in dispatches for bravery. Mr Johnson said during the invasion of Sicily, his “quick thinking” helped save his ship and he then “took an ethic of service that he applied throughout the unprecedented changes of the post-war era”.
