With his victory over Marin Cilic on Sunday, the Swiss player broke the record for Wimbledon men’s singles titles; he has now won 19 Grand Slams, four more than any other male player. Less than a month short of his 36th birthday, Federer is the oldest Wimbledon winner in the Open era, and “if anything, he is getting better”: for the first time, he made it through the tournament without dropping a set, a feat last achieved by Björn Borg in 1976. There can be no doubt, after this, that he is “the greatest player Wimbledon has seen”.
