Africa's horticultural and floricultural produce have gained popularity over the years in the international markets due to the quality and variety that the continent has to offer. For instance, Kenya holds 7 percent of the global market share of flowers today. There is also growth in perishable volumes from South Africa. With the growing volumes, every stakeholder in the air cargo supply chain must focus on collaboration to ensure that the perishables are delivered fresh to the world.
Flowers and perishables, being temperature sensitive commodities, need to be handled with lot of care throughout the entire supply chain. Every stakeholder deals with various areas of concern when transporting these commodities.
‘Air Shippers’ Forum – Flowers & Perishables’ hosted by Saudia Cargo on the first day of the three day event Air Cargo Africa 2017 brought together shippers and other stakeholders involved in the supply chain to discuss the theme of the forum “Perishables by air-delivering fresh”.
The forum brought together various industry stalwarts to discuss solutions to ensure that the best quality of flowers and perishables reach the consumer. The panelists for the session were: Conrad Archer, Country Managing director, Panalpina Airflo, Kenya; Jane Ngige, Chief Executive Officer, Kenya Flower Council; David Becham, Senior Manager, Cargo Products, Qatar Airways Cargo; Dirk Hanekom, CEO, Agri All Africa and Stanley Winter bach, Managing director, Agri All Africa Nigeria.
The session was moderated by Joseph Notter, Vice President, Operations, Saudia Cargo.
David Becham, Qatar Airways Cargo, mentioned three areas of frustration in the supply chain. One of the major frustration area is ensuring that the shipper actually present the cargo to us at the right temperature in the beginning.
He said, “Because at the end of the day, if the product isn’t at the right temperature right at the beginning of the chain, it will never be at the right temperature throughout the chain.”

Global air cargo industry continues to suffer across all regions and the demand decline experienced in 2019 is the steepest drop since 2009 during the global financial crisis. Airline association IATA predicts that air cargo demand will increase by two percent in 2020; however there are several ifs and buts for the industry to get back to growth momentum.
