Working Magic
Sridevi was at the top of her career, when she gave me—a newcomer— a chance with Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1993). I owe my career to her.
I had assisted Shekhar Kapur in Joshilaay, and Mr.India. As an assistant director, I used to interact with her a lot, telling her about the scenes and the shots. By the time Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja happened, she had enough confidence in me. Besides, my friend Boney Kapoor was the producer. I couldn’t have asked for a better start. After I became a director, she married Boney and became a family member.
Working with her was a treat. A director had to explain just the minimum and she would express and enliven the role, creating an unforgettable impact. For

Readers in India may be misled by the title of Gautam Hazarika's new book, The Forgotten Indian Prisoners of World War II: Surrender, Loyalty, Betrayal and Hell. It is not about the INA prisoners who were put on trial in the Red Fort by the British. This book is about those Indian soldiers who fought the Japanese in Singapore, Malaya and Burma alongside the British, and who had to surrender, were taken prisoner, put to torture and hard labour by the Japanese, refused to join the INA, and faced death or managed to escape. While recounting their stories, Hazarika also gives an insight into the INA movement. Edited excerpts from an interview with the author:
