“I would dream of being Louis Jordan and dream of being Nat ‘King’ Cole or Joe Louis,” remembers the 84-year-old country boy from Kenner, Louisiana.

MOJO is visiting Price in his large country pile in New York’s Westchester County, the walls and shelves of which are covered with gold records and photos of the artist also known as ‘Mr Personality’ with legends of music, sports and politics.

By the time Price was 19 he had become part of rock’n’roll history when the first song he ever wrote, Lawdy Miss Clawdy, became a crossover smash. Later, his drive to stay out of Kenner set him on a path of entrepreneurship from hitmaker to record label owner, boxing promoter, club owner and manager of Icon Foods, a company which specialises in Southern-style eats. “I always was motivated to keep trying stuff,” he says with a smile.

How did you come up with Lawdy Miss Clawdy?
