John Boon takes a look at the tackle setup used for trout Spey fishing. Americans are fully aware of this method, which just might be the next big thing in this country.
Trout Spey is a term you may not have heard of in Britain but is something that our American cousins are all too aware of.
Simply, all trout Spey refers to is fishing for trout with light double-handed/ switch-style rods in 2-wt through to 5-wt. To put this into perspective, a 3-wt trout Spey would be, in terms of rod strength, similar to that of a 6-wt single-handed rod.
For the last couple of months I have been putting the new Redington Hydrogen trout Spey through its paces and it certainly hasn’t let me down. New for 2017, it is available in 11ft 3in 3-wt and 11ft 6in 4-wt models.
