Nature Running the Course
Mississippi Magazine
|September-October 2016
Mississippi’s newest golf course celebrates the rolling hills of the Black Prairie.
The name Mossy Oak may ring bells for its well-respected lines of camouflage, but it’s the company’s dedication to our state’s beautiful outdoors that also brings a new naturalists’ golf course to Mississippi—Mossy Oak Golf Club. Developed by Marcia and George Bryan of Mississippi’s prized Old Waverly and the Haas family of ever-popular Mossy Oak, a pioneer in the preservation of natural habitats, the new public course is set to open September 2.
Since he was a boy, George Bryan has loved golf. As he grew older, so did his daydreams of building a golf course in West Point. In 1988, Old Waverly opened. One course, however, wasn’t enough, and it wasn’t long before Bryan began toying around with the idea to create a new course, different from Old Waverly. A few years ago Bryan decided to take a gamble and develop a public, minimalist golf course, quite the contrast of Old Waverly’s Southern style.
