Heightened Seismic Activity Rattles Mizoram

In the last couple of weeks, Mizoram has suffered from multiple quakes that has left the locals quite puzzled and anxious

Northeast India is not new to earthquakes. In fact, some of the biggest quakes in history were recorded in this part of the country. But, more recently, Mizoram has been witnessing more seismic activity than normal and the reasons behind the same are still not certain. Experts are still in the process of understanding the nature of these quakes that have rocked Mizoram in the past few weeks.

The starting 5.0

It all started with an earthquake on June 18 which measured a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale. Taking place at 7:29 pm, the epicentre was recorded 98 km south-east of Champhai in Mizoram. The same earthquake also shook adjoining neighbour Myanmar. Interestingly enough, many places in India have been experiencing similar medium intensity earthquakes on a regular basis.
