Talking a lot of rot
Country Life UK
|November 17, 2021
ONCE upon a time, the three ‘r’s meant reading, ’riting and ’rithmetic. Nowadays, they stand for ‘recycle, repurpose and re-use’.

I grumble to myself frequently (although my intimates would probably argue that, actually, I have a tendency to overshare in that department) about what I perceive as unnecessary change and oversensitivity in 21st-century life, but that is one endeavour with which I have no issue. Anyone with a modicum of intelligence can see the wisdom of adjusting our lives in an increasingly throwaway society to make more use of what we have and hold back on landfills, incineration, and the distribution of detritus across our land and in our oceans. But then, good gardeners have been recycling for centuries. We call it composting.
