THE fantastical landscape of Brimham Rocks was formed about 320 million years ago, when torrents of sand, grit and water poured down from Norway and Scotland, creating eerie sandstone sculptures moulded into their layered shapes, like ragged cream slices, by later glacier advancement. So mystical and striking are their forms that, in the 18th and 19th centuries, some believed they had been carved by druids—hence Druid’s Writing Desk and Druid’s Coffin—rather than sculpted by natural, if violent, earth movements and millions of years of weathering.
