GRANT SAVOURY achieves his goal with a long-range shot

GRANT Savoury was delighted to finally find his shooting boots in a match for the Development Squad after his superb long-range strike helped them sink Kilmarnock last week.

The 17-year-old’s aim had been hitting the target regularly at training but, much to his frustration, he had only one goal to his name for the Bhoys before the visit of the Rugby Park side – a close-range effort in a 3-0 win over St Johnstone at the end of November.

His goal against the Ayrshire outfit was in complete contrast to that. Receiving a pass from Stephen Welsh, the winger drove towards the box before unleashing a pile-driver into the far corner to put the young Hoops into a 2-0 lead at Cappielow.

“I just got the ball off the edge of the box from Welshy,” Savoury told the View in an exclusive interview. “I turned and saw I had space in front of me so I drove into it. No-one really came out to press, so I saw the goal and looked to get a good connection with the ball and it found the bottom corner. I was very pleased with it.

“I had been getting quite frustrated as I was doing it in shooting practice at training but wasn’t doing it in the games, so it was pleasing to finally replicate it in a match.

“It’s something I want to add for the rest of the season, along with assists.”

The young Celts would go on to record a 4-0 victory over the visitors, which saw them make a welcome return to winning ways after going three games without a win. And Savoury admitted it was crucial the team went into the international break on the back of a morale-boosting result.

“It was a game we knew we needed to win, so I was happy to contribute and help the team get the three points,” he said.
