When comedian Shimmy Isaacs went LCHF and took up functional training, she finally got that healthy feeling she’d been trying to achieve for so long. Now she’s 20kg lighter, doesn’t get any hunger pangs and has mental clarity like never before!
'I've always been on and off diets – cutting out certain things and then going through a dip again. I’ve also always been very active – exercising and doing outdoor activities – but when it came to healthy eating, I’d go through phases. I had no idea of the effect of sugar and carbs on my body, but once I understood the health conditions they contributed to, the penny dropped.
My mom is asthmatic, my dad is diabetic and obesity runs in my family, so doing what I can to avoid these problems became really important to me. I asked myself, “What do I want to feel like when I’m 50 or 60? And what do I want my health status to be?”
The thing is, all the information is out there, so I no longer have the excuse of not knowing. My approach went from, “I want to be skinny” to “I want to be healthy”. It wasn’t just about weight loss any longer. When I made this mental switch, I made a commitment to myself. I understood that it was a huge change and that it would take a lot of patience with myself.
I started with training. I joined 360 Specialized Training, a functional training, Crossfit-style gym. My trainer specialised in nutrition and we tackled my diet and lifestyle together. He asked me: “How do you want to feel? What do you want to accomplish?” “I want spiritual and mental fitness,” I said. That was key for me.
