Sometimes the more successful you are, the more likely you are to cheat – and keep on cheating, counterintuitive as it may sound. When you stand on the scale and see you’ve lost five kilos in a month, you are proud and thrilled. Then your colleague brings a delicious chocolate cake to the office, and 10 minutes later, as you wipe the crumbs off your top lip, you think, ‘What just happened?’ One ‘cheat’ leads to another and, before you know it, you’re on a slippery slope – one that leads back into your tracksuit pants with the elasticated waist. Why is it that motivation ebbs and flows like the tides? How can we ensure that this doesn’t impact negatively on reaching our goals?
Believe that LCHF is different
Your previous dieting attempts may have failed because you’ve followed diets that focus on calorie restriction and eating low-fat. It’s exceedingly difficult to stay motivated when your tummy is grumbling and you feel drained of energy. But LCHF is different. It’s tasty – and the healthy fat component keeps you satisfied for hours. Carb cravings are dramatically reduced, so you can say goodbye to bad habits – like that rusk with your tea. Sweet and starchy foods lose their vice-like grip on you, making it much easier to maintain a healthy way of eating. You know all this intellectually, but the trick is to accept it emotionally. You have to learn to trust the process: you will feel satisfied – so stop focusing on what you’re not eating and learn to enjoy what you are.
