Just the tonic

Surrounded by other buildings, the conversion of a Victorian gin distillery in London by Open Practice Architecture hinged on the injection of natural light while maintaining privacy in the urban setting. Rupert Scott, the client, and architect, created a hidden courtyard behind the original façade and positioned light wells, a screen, and openings to allow the daylight to shift across the newly transformed home. Steel beams, Crittall windows, polished concrete, and raw timber provide a characterful homage to the building's industrial past while an enclosed terrace above provides an outdoor retreat for Rupert.
