THE ADDITION OF A SILO-STYLE TOWER TRANSFORMS A TIN-ROOFED BUNGALOW INTO A SPACIOUS, OPEN FAMILY HOME

New HEIGHTS

SLEEK AND SIMPLE Charmed by the garden and its big trees, Charlene and Ruan knew this 1940s home in South Africa could be perfect for them and their son Viljoen – once some changes were made that respected its history. In the living area (below), architect Nadine Engelbrecht removed most of the interior walls and the ceiling to expose the trusses and create a loftier space. The steel of the window frames prompted a refined industrial approach. “I like the industrial feel of the black metal details,” says Charlene, swiftly adding she’s tempered it with “white for the fresh, minimalist look to create a blank canvas – everything looks good against white.” The felt rabbits on the dining table are handcrafted in Cape Town. For a similar table, try the ‘Byron’ mindi wood dining table from Living Styles. A rabbit sculpture by Guy du Toit sits on a table in the entrance area (opposite).

Deck the DOORS

The front door is our favourite place to make a festive first impression, and it doesn't have to involve a traditional wreath. From fragrant foliage and whimsical florals to ribbons, bells and pine cones, there are countless ways to deck your doorway in seasonal style. It might even be the perfect time to adorn your door with a fresh coat of paint. Here, we've matched Wattyl's most beautiful hues with decorative touches to ring in the holidays in style – and keep the cheer shining long after the season ends.
