Danielle and Simon King have renovated a 17th-century farmhouse and stable to combine modern-day comfort with traditional country style

PASSION PROJECT

Danielle King and her husband Simon were happy enough in their 1920s house in Berkhamsted, especially as they had renovated it from top to toe. ‘We loved it but the garden became a sticking point. It was on a slope and impractical for our daughter Mila, who was a toddler at the time,’ says Danielle. ‘Also, Simon had loved carrying out the renovation, so that was all the excuse he needed to look for another project.’

The couple began the hunt for another property and came across a charming 17th-century farmhouse and adjacent stable in a quiet location on the outskirts of town, with easy access to local woods and the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside. The property had once formed part of a large manor house and estate, with some of the buildings dating back to the Elizabethan era. ‘It was a fascinating little pocket of Berkhamsted we never knew existed,’ says Danielle.
