THE NEW STATE OF BODYBUILDING FOLLOWING THE IFBB SPLIT
THERE ARE TWO PROVERBIAL MOUNTAINS THAT ANY SERIOUS BODYBUILDER WANTS TO SCALE: ACHIEVING IFBB PRO STATUS AND COMPETING ON THE OLYMPIA STAGE. After a recent split within the ranks of the IFBB and the National Physique Committee (NPC), the IFBB Pro League and the IFBB International are no longer affiliated. That effectively means that the NPC is now the only way to qualify for Pro League shows and the Mr. Olympia.
To understand the dynamics that led to this critical moment in bodybuilding history, one needs to know the key industry figureheads. In one corner is Jim Manion, President of the American-driven NPC, the amateur relative of the IFBB Pro League. In the opposite corner is Dr. Rafael Santonja from Spain, President of the IFBB International, the amateur federation, and the force behind the emergence of the newly established IFBB Elite Pro League.
Muscle Evolution asked the President of IFBB South Africa, Wayne Price for some clarity on the break-up and what the future holds for local athletes.
Wayne, thanks for your time. Please explain how the IFBB and the IFBB Pro League/ NPC have been structured over the years and what led to the break-up?
