No More Moon Boots?
Treasure Hunting magazine|September 2020
In more than four decades of detecting, the weather and varying soil conditions have all had a huge influence on the level of my enjoyment of this noble hobby.

No More Moon Boots?

A clay-based field can feel like concrete in the summer, but come the autumnal and winter rains can be transformed into a mini Somme environment! Even fields that are still covered in decaying stubble can result in the development of what I call ‘Moon Boots’.

These moist or saturated clay-based soils can result in the detectorist carrying around many extra pounds in weight attached to their wellies. I’ve seen people wobbling about, swinging their arms, and on occasion totally lose their balance in such conditions. The extra weight can be very tiring, causing fatigue and strain, and for us somewhat older individuals, can be tedious, annoying and downright dangerous.

Lost and Found?

There have been several instances over my long detecting career where, not only has it has been a delight to be able to help people who have lost things, but also a great thrill when such losses are returned to their owners. I have several memories of such occurrences.
