Georgia Hound Hunt

Hot and dry - two words bear houndsmen aren’t very fond of when opening day arrives.

This season, the fall of 2019, was the first bear hunt with hounds in the mountains of North Georgia in recent history, and would be my first bear hunt here. This particular hunt was a quota hunt, consisting of fifteen hunters being drawn to hunt on the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Wildlife Management Areas. Each hunter drawn was then able to put together a hunting party consisting of no more than ten hunters in total. The season, which ran from September 28th through October 6th, promised to be exciting regardless of the weather.
Opening morning started early and all participants were excited to see what the day would bring. As luck would have it, we wouldn’t have to wait very long for the action to begin. About half an hour before daylight, our party had two runnable tracks already rigged and ready to roll. When legal daylight finally arrived, the first race was started. Thirty to forty-five minutes of clear-cuts, laurel thickets, and river crossings concluded with our first bear of the season up a tree and then harvested.
