Bill Rushmer - Preparing For The Pits
Angler's Mail
|October 08, 2019
With a little help from his friends, in this mini series Bill reveals how he’s managed to get back on the banks after beating prostate cancer.

MY wife, Virginia, and I have been friends with Les and Helen Barker for well over 30 years. They used to live near our old house in Ashford, Middlesex, but they moved to Fordingbridge, a town that has the Hampshire Avon flowing through it, about 20 years ago, so we saw less of them. But now that we are living in Christchurch, Dorset, we are only 25-minute drive apart and have started to meet up more regularly.
Les is a good all-round angler who enjoys trotting the Hampshire Avon, chucking fluff and especially carp fishing, highlighted by the fact that every year he goes on a three-week carp-fishing trip to France.
While float fishing for roach, dace and grey mullet on the Dorset Stour, at Tuckton, we started to talk about Ringwood DAA’s big gravel pits, which are situated about halfway between our homes.

It takes angling guide Kenny Parsons a few hours to drive from his home, near Bath, to his favourite Wessex rivers, but it doesn’t seem to bother him, as he just loves to catch big chub on feeder and fl oat tactics, his personal best standing at 7 lb 12 oz. One of his favourite methods for this cunning species is a maggot feeder with a short hook link.
