Following the murder of their son Stephen in a racially motivated attack in south-east London in 1993, Neville and Doreen Lawrence vowed to bring his killers to justice. However, the initial investigation into the crime was fundamentally flawed, and failed to result in a successful prosecution – leading to a public enquiry that found the Met Police to be ‘institutionally racist’.
