A family turns back the clock to live and work as shopkeepers

The popular Back in Time for… series, hosted by Sara Cox, returns for a new five-part series, in which one brave Sheffield family travels back through the decades to run a corner shop, experiencing the highs and lows of life behind the counter from the 1890s to the 1990s.

This week’s first episode sees the Ardern family transported to 1897, long before prepackaged goods, tills and fridges existed, to run their own Ardern & Son shop in Sheffield.

As they fast-forward through 100 years of shopkeeping, the unfolding changes in their working and home lives reflect what’s happening in British society across the century.
