NEW CRIME DRAMA

Van Der Valk

Sunday, ITV HD, 8pm

Readers of a certain age will have fond memories of ITV cop drama Van Der Valk, which followed Dutch detective Piet Van Der Valk, played by the late Barry Foster, as he tackled crime across Amsterdam.

The show first aired in the early 1970s and ran on and off for five series over the following two decades. It even spawned a No.1 hit: its theme tune made the top of the music charts in 1973.

Now, 28 years after the last episode, ITV has rebooted the crime drama, with Marc Warren taking over the title role.

Set amid Amsterdam’s scenic canals and streets, the three-part series follows the unapologetic yet intuitive Dutch detective – or Commissaris – as he finds himself involved in high-profile cases.

When TV&Satellite Week meets Warren in Amsterdam during filming, he stresses the show is a reimagining rather than a remake.
