TV&Satellite Week goes on set in Georgia for the thrilling new series of The Walking Dead

Day Of The Dead

On a sweltering August day in Senoia, Georgia, TV&Satellite Week is on set for series 10 of FOX’s smash-hit post-apocalyptic drama The Walking Dead.

Slightly zombified with jet lag, we’re lurking in the woods by the corrugated iron perimeter fence that keeps the inhabitants of Alexandria safe from the undead ‘Walkers’ who stalk the land following a deadly global virus.

Nearby, terrifying-looking extras are having their clothes and teeth blackened while chatting to crew and grabbing drinks from cool boxes. Smoke (made by smoke machines) hangs in the air and, to add to the air of foreboding, buzzards circle in the sky above.

During a break in filming, director Greg Nicotero, who started out as a make-up effects artist on George A Romero’s 1986 zombie classic Day of the Dead, emerges grinning from the shade of a gazebo to chat.

‘The beauty of this show is that the characters continue to evolve,’ he says. ‘The way it plays with them is interesting – sometimes wounding each other, sometimes supporting each other against this crazy backdrop.’
