In a lengthy op-ed essay about Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini, written for Harper's magazine in 2021, Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese made the case that cinema today is being devalued by business models that treat everything - be it 'a David Lean movie, a cat video, a Super Bowl commercial, a superhero sequel, a series episode - as interchangeable 'content'.
Referring to streaming platforms in particular, Scorsese wrote: 'We have to make it crystal clear to the current legal owners of these films that they amount to much, much more than mere property to be exploited and then locked away. They are among the greatest treasures of our culture, and they must be treated accordingly.'
While I don't agree with all of Scorsese's views about the current state of filmmaking (we're never going to see eye-to-eye on whether or not Marvel movies constitute 'cinema'), that last quote of his came to mind in when Amazon finally completed its $8.5billion acquisition of MGM last month.
