Friends Or Foes?

When Bonang Matheba suddenly left Metro FM, people said she did it to avoid having to co-host with Lerato Kganyago. We look at whether it was beef or business.

THEY’RE beautiful, powerful trendsetters who inspire young women all over the country. They have talent in abundance and charisma that companies pay big bucks for.

On the surface it would seem they’d be the perfect pair, given how closely matched they are. Yet when It girls Bonang Matheba and Lerato “LKG” Kganyago were put together to host Metro FM’s mid­morning show The Front Row, listeners were surprised.

Would the women be able to work together? After all, the two reportedly have a long­standing rivalry – at one point Lerato (34) apparently refused to do interviews if she was asked about Bonang, someone she’s often compared to.

Of course, fans were thrilled that they’d have a front­row seat to any on air action between the two – but they were disappointed. Instead, there was plenty of behind­the­scenes drama as Bonang resigned soon after hearing who would be her partner on air.

But her resignation had nothing to do with Lerato, Bonang tells DRUM firmly.

“I was flabbergasted – not because LKG would be my co­host, but because of how they told me of the changes.”

She received a call from the station’s management the Sunday before the station announced its new line­up and they asked her to come in for a meeting.

“But I was spending time with my family,” she explains.
