Rare opportunity

Amelia Millman and Jason Greenway tell TONY JACKSON about their farming enterprise with a difference

Have you ever seen a pig with a thick furry coat? No, well neither had I until I met a remarkable young couple who, through enterprise and energy, have succeeded in creating a farmbased business which is thriving.
Amelia Millman, 18 and her partner Jason Greenway, 22, both have farming backgrounds. Amelia quit school at 16 to work for a short time in a livery yard but left to pursue her real ambition, a career in farming. She milked cows and fed calves on three farms to broaden her skills and save money, while her boyfriend Jason was already working on a farm.
So, when the chance arose to buy three Red Ruby steers at a good price they took the plunge and reared them on Jason’s grandfather’s farm to sell the grass-fed organic meat to local people in the form of beef boxes.
Whilst these proved very popular, neither Amelia nor Jason were yet able to develop the business. However, the chance to rent a farm came up. It was a once-in-lifetime opportunity!
