Ancient ways and aviation

An East Devon walk where SIMONE STANBROOK-BYRNE finds history and the modern day rubbing shoulders

Sometimes a really delightful amble can be packaged up with several other things to make a lovely day out, and this is one such. This truly beautiful walk traverses pastoral farmland and follows ancient, hidden ways, where many have trod before.

A short drive from the village are the ruins of Dunkeswell Abbey, which, although not extensive, are worth a visit for their interest and idyllic setting. Cheek by jowl with all this is the modern-day airfield, offering a welcoming refreshment stop and a heritage centre for those who want a bit more history, the latter displaying more than 400 photographs of life on the base during the Second World War.

Some of the paths can be muddy or overgrown – these are excellent for wildlife – so be dressed accordingly and pack your sense of adventure and spare socks, plus a walking pole to push nettles aside if walking in ‘nettle season’.

ROUTE:

1 From Deep Cut Cross on Abbey Road walk uphill out of the village, passing the track to Blue Haze on the right. As the road bends left a footpath goes right off the road, through a kissing gate. Go left on the clear path beyond, walking beneath trees.

After the next kissing gate turn right to follow the path along the field edge, hedge to your right. At the end of the field go through a metal gate and turn right along the farm track, enjoying occasional gateway views.

2 The track bends left, passing the buildings of Hutshayes Farm; it’s concreted underfoot here. Keep ahead and as the concrete finishes pass through a yellow-arrowed gate into a field, walking ahead with the hedge to your left and undulating views to the right.
