Novelist Mary Beth Keane turns her sights to family strife—and strength—in Ask Again, Yes
MARY BETH KEANE IS no stranger to accolades. She’s won a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, and her 2013 novel, Fever, is being developed by Elisabeth Moss as a miniseries for BBC America. But Keane’s third book, Ask Again, Yes—a title taken from Molly Bloom’s words at the end of James Joyce’s Ulysses— might be what finally carves her name in the literary stratosphere.
The novel is an intergenerational tale of two neighboring Irish-American families in upstate New York. Brian Stanhope and his wife, Anne, become irrevocably intertwined with Francis Gleeson and his wife, Lena, because of the relationship between their children and a tragedy that reverberates through the rest of their lives. Watch! spoke with Keane about inspiration, marriage, and forgiveness.
