Improved Regulatory Support Push Clinical Research In Asia
BioSpectrum Asia
|October 2019
The prevalence of infectious and tropical diseases is creating an unmet clinical needs in emerging countries.
Owing to these, a large number of the population participate in clinical trials to access high-quality healthcare free of cost. India and China have the highest prevalence rates for metabolic disorders, due to the increasing population, combined with the prevalence of insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, and obesity. Besides the Asian region has the potential for large patient recruitment, cost reduction, the improved regulatory environment making it a favourable destination for clinical trials.
Asia-Pacific clinical trials market size is projected to reach approximately $5.2 billion by the end of 2024 with a CAGR of close to 9.1 per cent from $3.50 billion in 2017 during the forecast timeline 2018-2024. Key parameters promoting the market growth include Increased R&D investment in the pharmaceutical industry, increased prevalence of chronic diseases, increased clinical research outsourcing and implementation of clinical trials by contract research organizations and assimilation of clinical trial management systems with hospital information systems.
Growing prevalence of disease and incidence of a new disease is expected to give further boost to the clinical trial market. The worldwide population has varied disease profile with emerging countries having the most diverse disease profile. This is expected to boost the clinical trial of new or rare disease which otherwise would not have found any sponsors. More number of patients having a specific disease would act as a stimulus for biopharmaceutical companies to invest more in clinical trials for a disease segment. Let’s look at some of the countries like India, China, South Korea which have changed their regulatory policies to boost clinical trial market.
