There are times when you come across something which piques or rekindles a particular interest. It happened this week for me when I found a 1989 Chevrolet Caprice 9C1 for sale. Granted, the car was out in California, but it was described as a genuine ex-California Highway Patrol cruiser with relatively low miles and in excellent condition.
It got me thinking back to the very first article I read on American police cars within the pages of this magazine way back in 1990. Since that time, US cop cruisers have held a special interest. What else could be optioned with a powerful engine, in some cases top 150mph, and feature heavy-duty parts such as cooling, suspension and brakes not available to the average civilian car buyer, yet still have four-door practicality? Why – an American police car.
