When we travelled, sometimes we either stayed in a hotel or in people’s homes. I usually liked to stay with people because Spike and I enjoyed the company, but staying in hotels where the seminar or conference is held, could also be fun. When we were staying in homes, there were a few times when I went to get Spike out of his cage and he wasn’t there. Then I would hear talking in another room or whistling in the shower. Our hosts would be feeding Spike his breakfast or taking a shower with him. I had written about how much he loved showers so evidently some folks wanted the experience of showering with him and he didn’t disappoint. If I was staying in a hotel, sometimes people would tell me that they knew what room I was in because they could hear Spike whistling in the shower.
Spike and I were always treated like royalty anywhere we went. I often got to visit local tourist attractions and nature centers, and sometimes Spike got to go with me. On one occasion, he joined us on a boat tour of New York harbor and got to see the Statue of Liberty. We stayed at an apartment with a view of the World Trade Centre before it was destroyed in the terrorist attack. Our trips to Boston, New York City, and Florida may have been Spike’s favorites since he became a seafood connoisseur. But he also went to various eating places throughout the country, although not allowed in some!
Spike was a glutton
Spike didn’t have the greatest table manners, but most parrot people at convention banquets loved to have him come over and eat off of their plates. He was a glutton and would eat almost anything edible, so there were certain rules about what people could let him eat and how much. Needless to say, he got away with more than he was allowed and he knew it. If anyone was holding Spike and eating and didn’t share, they could suffer his wrath.

Regent parrots thriving in SA wetland

The wetland manager at Banrock Station in South Australia is, itâs fair to say, smitten with these striking birds. âSeptember and October is Regent Parrot survey time,â Tim says, âSo weâre up well before dawn to make sure weâre at the wetlandâs to track the fly-in, fly-out breeding population.â
Landmark event for Philippine Cockatoo
Exciting news has recently arrived of a landmark event in the Philippine Cockatoo Conservation Program (PCCP), the long-term endeavour to bring about the recovery of this âCritically Endangeredâ species endemic to the Philippines. For the first time ever, a Philippine Cockatoo rescued from the wild, and subsequently released back to its original site, has been recorded to breed and produce a healthy hatchling. Such rescue and release to augment the wild population is just one of a raft of conservation measures conducted by the PCCP and supported by the Loro Parque Fundación over many years.

Rare macaw refuge destroyed
A rare bird sanctuary in Brazil, which is home to 15 per cent of the worldâs population of Hyacinth and Learâs Macaws, has been destroyed by fires, and there are now fears for the survival of these blue macaws. âIt is very sad to see decades of my familyâs work, years taking care and preserving nature, for this to happen,â said Ana Maria Barreto, owner of the São Francisco do Perigara, a cattle ranch and bird sanctuary of more than 61,000 acres in Mato Grosso state.
