A nuclear-powered aircraft is not a new concept – during the Cold War the rivalry between USA and Russia drove much of the interest in nuclear-powered flight, especially during the late 1950s and early ’60s as both conducted research into nuclear-powered bomber aircraft, the greater endurance of which could enhance nuclear deterrence, but neither country created any such operational aircraft. The intention was to produce a jet engine that would heat compressed air with heat from fission, instead of heat.
