It is clear that human trafficking is a global menace directly affecting millions of persons across the globe, of whom a large number are women and children. This pandemic has brought different international organisms, including the Catholic Church, to take action not just in promoting awareness to the seriousness of the crimes being committed, but also in calling for justice for all those who fall victim to it. It is not enough to bring the traffickers to justice. We need to change our abusive and unscrupulous mentality that blinds us from recognizing the dignity of every human being. In this regard, women and children are the most vulnerable to abuse. Often victims of violence and neglect, they are an easy prey to those who see them as tools for greater profit.
A change of heart and mind and a revival of the conscience are much needed for us to realize that, in our own little way, we can contribute to stop trafficking. Yes, to curb such a global pandemic needs some local action – starting from ourselves from the mere way we treat others.
