There’s some new iPhones! Oh, you heard? 
One’s mega-powerful and the other’s super-colourful,
but will they inspire enough adulation to restore Apple’s place at the head of the tech pantheon? The first coming of iPhone and iPad ensured years of fan worship for the late Steve Jobs and his disciples, making them seemingly insurmountable. We’ve reviewed the iPhone 5s on p82 to see if it at least restores the iPhone idol to its place atop the smartphones altar.

There hasn\'t been an evolutionary jump like this since the App Store first materialised from the genius mind of Steve Jobs. iOS 7 developers are ditching the twee faux-analogue design flourishes that previously Apple championed with the page turning of Calendar, the hideous velvet curtain opening of Photobooth and, of course, the Ikea-esque bookcases of iBooks. Of course, we welcome the death of skeuomorphism, but stoneage apps wearing new loincloths is but a small step towards the second age of apps – we uncover the giant leaps on p46.

The first time you used an iPhone was probably one of them and I suspect the first time you successfully 3D-print something will be another. With these desktop builderbots becoming ever more attainable, we thought it was time to put some of them to work.

Round one of the next-gen gaming showdown may have not begun, but there’s a clear favourite after the weigh-in. Following plenty of posturing and badmouthing at the E3 tradeshow in LA, the internet has decided that the PS4 (1) was the hero and the Xbox One (2) the heel. But is it as simple as price disparity and evasiveness, or are our expectations to blame? We bare-out our unbiased musings on the respective pros and cones of these mega consoles are laid down on p46 where we also introduce the crazy notion that Steam is going to ‘pwn’ both of them at the same time.

Make yourself at home. If you’re new to Stuff, settle in for a gadgety feast. If you’re a regular reader, you might have noticed a few changes around these parts. Don’t worry: it’s the same mag it’s always been, just a little, well, different.Since last we overhauled, technology’s moved on (as it’s wont to do). The iPad’s happened. Google’s taken over the world. Apps and firmware upgrades are the new gadgets. We felt we had to move on too.

This month, our geekiest dreams became reality. The ability to transform ourselves into cyborgs complete with head-up display is a nailed-on certainty now that Google has beta-released Glass into the wild. Meanwhile, Dick Tracy tech received a major boost as rumours emerged from NYT and WSJ of Apple’s iWatch. The signs are clear: pockets will soon become obsolete as part of the wearable gadget revolution, whether it demands a shot of sartorial bravery or just requires you to strap something shiny to your wrist.

Admittedly, I was THIS close to dumping my BlackBerry 
for a shiny new Android device maybe even the  new Samsung GALAXY S4 that is going to hit our shores (or by the time you read this, already hit our shores). However with BlackBerry finally releasing their first BB10 device, the Z10, here I was more than ecstatic about getting my hands on it. Which is why we’ve taken a look this month at the new Z10, full review on page 42 (1), and see if it’ll be the phone that lifts BlackBerry’s fortunes up.

Let’s take a second to mourn for the non-initiated. The Joes and Moes who don’t buy Stuff, who don’t hang out in Apple Stores, who aren’t awoken by the insistent vibrato of an RSS reader app busting to unload the night’s tech news into their eyes. Every now and then, they need a new TV so they buy the wrong model on the suggestion of Kevin from the out-of-town megastore.

This month we’ve all taken a long, hard look at ourselves and decide … actually, we’re in pretty good shape. Really, what’s the fuss about? We’ve got an iPad Mini, an unecessarily expensive mountain bike and some pretty good times on Strava, and then there’s that fledgling Arduino/app project. Plus, there’s good times ahead in the shape of the re-emergence of AR and VR gadgetry, Xbox Infinity and folding cars.

There was cacophony here at Stuff towers, the night the iPad Mini launched. In part this was because the rotation of the Earth made that early-morning SF launch an evening post-beer party. But for the most part the sound was a symphony of hmms and ehs? and whats?, as Apple chose to be bridesmaid, not bride, by launching a ‘small’ tablet that was bigger, lower-res and more expensive than rivals – although none the less desirable for it.

It’s the holiday season and boy are we excited! This year’s season to be jolly has given us a wonderful number of toys, gadgets and gears to choose from and we’ve come up with a list (1, p74) to help you on your shopping spree. So if you be needing some new dalliances on the gadget side, you know where go. Of course one thing we’re sure you’re all be looking forward to are some new phones. The thing is, now you have to decide between a Galaxy S III or an iPhone 5, or one of the host of Androids that’s stuck its head over the parapet, such as the whopping Galaxy Note II
