This 47th issue of Gallerie on environment concerns, is a tribute to three inspiring souls who had inhabited our earth: The Birdman of India, ornithologist and naturalist; Salim Ali, Gandhian activist Sundarlal Bahuguna who gave traction to the ‘Chipko Andolan’ [Tree-hugging Movement] in India to preserve our trees, and feisty Kenyan activist Wangari Muta [Maathai], who had founded the Green Belt Movement working on reforestation and sustainability. Our profound 
gratitude to all of them.

This is the first Mãori word of greeting I learnt on emabarking on this very special  46th Gallerie issue on the  arts and culture of Aotearoa New Zealand; a region we want to know much more about. Like the refracted ray of light, what appears in all the features here, are a sum of what crossed time zones and Covid times to emerge as Aotearoa New Zealand, perceived through a distant but curious lens of seeking and finding – Editor, Bina Sarkar Ellias

“Identity”, begins with the existential question “Who am I?” and then, in the larger scheme of things, “Does it matter?”. The latter query can take you into meditations on the brevity of life, as well as the necessity of coexistence. For over twenty-two years and forty-five volumes, Gallerie has been encouraging  understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, in its conviction that culture humanises; in its belief that peaceful coexistence can repair and redeem this fractured world. 

It takes a while to learn and experience the strength and joy in engaging with transformational ideas; ideas that are seeded from conviction and a belief guided by a larger truth. Such work, even if incubating in the quietude of one’s thoughts, soon emerge as a fragrant mulled wine to be shared and savoured; or as a powerful voice that can resonate and touch people’s lives, often into leaping out of comfort zones into a collective cause.
These are voices that need to be heard. Gut-level, dissenting voices that speak for the people, for their awareness of and upliftment from the flagrant violence and injustices on human rights. These are voices from diverse corners of the world; from people practicing a diversity of disciplines that are passionate compulsions in their lives.

The essence of Thailand’s people clearly resonate in the Wild Boars —— twelve boys and their young soccer assistant coach, Ekkapol [Ake] Chantawong, a former monk, who were all trapped in the perilous Tham Luang caves in the Chiang Rai region of Thailand. Their stoic forbearance, immense strength and resilience are indeed, to be saluted and respected. Rescued after over two weeks of uncertain and tortuous days by a selfless team of brave divers, the feat was the  “making possible” of a mission impossible. It reaffirmed faith in humankind.

What we have learned and shared with our readers is the rich heritage of each country, the cultural uniqueness of its people and their innate desire for an equitable and peacefulworld. Most humans yearn for peace of mind besides the instincts for survival, but there are those who lust for more. This lusting for more is our bane. More land, more wealth, more power has lead to more violence, more wars, more misery and a world besieged with more regression and decadence. 
Resistance is the only positive direction to be taken in this era of unabated violence and destruction. Resist and overpower in peace and with love.

As each day counts, each breath we take must be a resolve to turn things around. Each one of us must shed prejudices driven by the notions of nation, territory, religion, race, caste and multiple dogmas. Once these divisive
factors are erased, a life-affirmative chapter will open. It can be done.

In the HOPE volume, being positive in the escalation of disquieting times is not to white-wash the blood stains
of our Kakfaesque existence, but to question and seek the antecedent for the prevailing anarchy... being positive is an
act of not offering our lives to the whims of faith and fate, but in nailing our apathy in resisting the authors of our contemporary ‘Inferno'.

A quick look at what has been recorded of Homo sapiens originated around 200,000 years ago, as fossils found at Omo Kibish in Ethiopia, verify that we have migrated through many moons and seasons, through wars, destruction, rehabilitation, and reinvention.
Such cruel irony then, that a civilisation having evolved from the earliest migrants in Africa, some 60,000 years ago, have “black”-listed their progenitors in our race-ridden world. The migration was believed to have been propelled by climate change.

‘New York, New York: A Confluence of Cultures’ celebrates diversity and the many forms of creative excellence that has emerged from it. Impossible to cover its immense span and depth, we bring to you a few of the fine minds that charge the city. Enjoy their work, know the city through them and embrace the quilt of cultures.

On my first visit to Taiwan in 2014, at the invitation of dear friends, I was delighted with the land and its people who squashed all stereotypical views I’d heard, of it being a bland economic power, an industrial island of factories and smoke. Taiwan, in 35 years since the 80s, has in fact, evolved into a region of not just self-reliant prosperity but that of clean air, impeccably pristine and aesthetic public spaces, organised streets, a delightful array of cuisine and a marvelously efficient high speed railway system.
