Empowering the ‘Power’

It has always been said ‘Behind every successful man, is a woman’. If the majority in the world regards this saying as truth, then why is there a need for empowering women? Because, whatever is being said or believed is far from the truth. Be it the most developed nations of the West or tribals from remote civilisations, equality of opportunity for women is not a reality yet achieved for most. Even in the present age, most women are not treated at par with men, be it professional life or domestic life. The concept of equal pay for equal work remains a disillusion, considering the fact that domestic duties of a woman are seldom accounted financially, nor shared by men in most of the cases. However, the vision of Dr Kaumudi Patil, Deputy Director of Income Tax differs on this. In our cover story on the occasion of Women’s Equality Day (26 August), she discusses how women equality although not a reality, can transform into one.

A new section aptly named ‘Double Speak’ presents the abilities of our learned advocates to present two sides of any argument, starting with a discussion on ‘decriminalisation of defamation’. This year we celebrate 68th Independence Day and yet a number of Indian citizens and valuable manpower suffer from modern day slavery i.e. human trafficking. In FLAIR Honours, we recognise the contribution of people who have worked for elimination of this social evil.
