Marriage deserves 'Ihsaan' (excellence) as we discussed in the previous issue, that it is half of our ‘Deen’ (religion) and rightly so. 

Ihsaan requires both husband and wife to have deep affection, mercy, mutual respect and understanding, commitment to the marriage and to their Creator. 

Therefore, part two of ‘The Muslim Marriage’ journey inspires singletons and married couples to see the beauty in marriage, with all the imperfections that comes with it and learn the wonderful ways that help strengthen marriage.

2016 has been an eventful year, a year filled with accomplishments and disappointments. What stood out the most is this shift in political rhetoric, where it has become more direct, but certainly not progressive. Our outward and inward identity came under question - Is the Islamic headcover ‘hijab’ oppressive?” “Does Islam promote violence?” Definitely not, and because of changes and major problems in international relations, the Muslim community across the globe is persistently challenged by the mainstream media and politics. In spite of the challenges we face, our deen (religion) teaches us how to deal with fear, hatred and prejudice.

Our religion teaches us to be socially responsible and active citizens of this world. The planet is being destroyed as a result of irresponsible and unjust living and it is the world’s poorest people who are the first to feel the effects of this detrimental way of living. So we continue with the theme “Living Green” and discover practical ways of taking care of our environment, how to treat animals and what it means to live a halal and tayyib way of life...

“Living Green” should be a standard way of life as Islam teaches us to protect and nurture our environment, for without it or if damaged, humankind will not continue. In Issue 20, part 1, we return to the core, the elements that make up this earth and our physical bodies, such as water as well as the functioning of our eco-system, which are miraculously mentioned in the Holy Qur’an as a reminder to mankind. We understand that the earth follows the Creator’s commands and so should we as our Lord says: “Indeed, all things We created with predestination. And Our command is but one, like a glance of the eye”. [Qur’an, Surah Al-Qamar: The Moon, 54:49-50]

Following on from ‘The Muslim Marriage’, the family in Islam is an important institution because we believe it is the building blocks of a healthy and thriving society. The family structure is supported by other institutions in accordance to ‘Shari’ah’ (Islamic Divine Law and Moral Code), such as free and quality housing, health care and education, which is quite rare to find in the modern world. Therefore, the Islamic family system gives the rights of the husband, wife, children, and relatives into a fine equilibrium. It nourishes unselfish behaviour, generosity, and love in the framework of a well-organised family system. The peace and security offered by a stable family unit is greatly valued, and it is seen as essential for the spiritual growth of its members. A harmonious social order is created by treasuring children and by the existence of extended families. The ‘Ummah’ (community of Muslims) is made up of families.

In Issues 17, 18 and 19 we will explore matters relating to marriage and raising children in Islam. In part one of ‘The Muslim Marriage’ journey, the writers will guide you through ‘why you should marry’, ‘when you should marry’ and ‘who you should marry’. In part two of the marriage journey, we will discuss how to conduct an Islamic wedding and what it takes to sustain a marriage in this day and age, which can be challenging at times but mostly a blessing.

What a beautiful way for the Ilma team to mark the end of 2015, by writing on a theme that is very dear to us; ‘Returning to Allah’. Our Lord, our Creator, created us from dust “then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot, and then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed”. [Qur’an, Surah Al-Hajj: The Pilgrimage, 22:5] Surely we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. We do not want to return to our Lord only in our final state which displeases Him but return to Him every day of our lives, at least five times a day. We want to return to Him when we are going through hardship; when we are alone by reciting words of ‘Dhikr’ (remembrance of Allah) and be reminded of Him when we are with our friend/s.

‘The Rope of Allah: Part 2’ articulates the concerns of a modern Muslim such as what the 21st century mosque entails, the journey to converting to Islam, youth development and cohesion of the ‘Ummah’ (community of Muslims). Therefore, there are three groups of people which we explore; the Muslim community leaders, Muslim converts and Muslim youths. We discover that Muslims in the West, particularly in Britain have made positive contributions in these three areas, but a lot more can be done in terms of organisation and structure.

This edition we take a look at the ‘Ummah’ (the community of Muslims) and humankind, and evaluate the current position and the position we should aspire towards in our quest to attain Allah Almighty’s pleasure, In shaa Allah (if Allah wills). We can currently see a number of problems such as tribalism, nationalism and racism plaguing the Muslim and non-Muslim communities in many parts of the world, all of which can be eradicated by heeding the advice found in the ‘ayah’ (verse): “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favour of Allah upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favour, brothers”. [Quran, Surah Al-Imran: Family of Imran, 3:103]

Issue 13 deals with the importance of seeking knowledge, be it religious or secular. Seeking good knowledge is the key to excel in this life and next, In shaa Allah. You will learn about the status quo of education and what we can do to improve the education system and the way we seek knowledge.

Issue 12 brings you back to the basics of worship in Islam such as the ‘Salah’ (Prayer), ‘Wudhu’ (ablution) and ‘Du’a’ (supplication). It is important for Muslims to perform their religious duties with ‘ihsaan’ (excellence) and ‘ikhlas’ (sincerity), and this edition is here to motivate you in achieving quality worship that can be put at its best practise in time for Ramadhan 2015 and the future, In shaa Allah.
